about
"Bed In Summer" is a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, originally published in "A Child's Garden of Verses" in 1913. Debbie Stempien & Greg Turner set these words with supplemental lyrics to music as a cheeky blues for two-part treble choir, in which children lament their unfair summer bedtimes.
lyrics
Bed In Summer Blues
In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.
I’m so blue, I got them Bed In Summer Blues.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
I’m so blue, I got them Bed In Summer Blues.
No fireflies, no starlit skies,
No marshmallows by the fireside,
I’m s’posta settle down and quit my yappin’,
But when I close my eyes, well, nothin’ happens!
And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?
I’m so blue, I got them Bed In Summer Blues.
No fireflies, no starlit skies,
No marshmallows by the fireside,
I’m s’posta settle down and quit my yappin’,
But when I close my eyes, well, nothin’ happens!
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people’s feet
Still going past me in the street.
I’m so blue, I got them Bed In Summer Blues.
Goodnight!
